We walk in and around so much mystery and intention throughout our lives, stories past, present
and future are everywhere around us whether we notice them or not. Once in a while we might catch glimpses of a narrative that resonates and invites inquiry. It could be just the way light falls or the way something moves, but for a moment we see part of a story, understand something new through our attention.
These images are all from a body of work centering in and around Potamos, the trees, buildings and people I might see every day but who, for an instant in time and space, stand out as part of a story all their own.
Daphne Petrohilos
Throughout the years, Daphne Petrohilos has been a constant and valued presence in the artistic programme of follow your art, participating in numerous exhibitions that have celebrated the creative spirit of Kythera.
Born in London and raised between Tanzania, Greece and the United Kingdom, Petrohilos studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before exhibiting in the United States, Great Britain, Ireland and across Europe. In 1992, she arrived on Kythera in search of her family's ancestral home. What was intended as a visit gradually became a lifelong connection, and the island has remained both her home and the heart of her artistic practice ever since.
The exhibition unfolds as a visual diary of that enduring relationship. Rather than depicting the island as an idyllic destination, Petrohilos paints the life that quietly unfolds within it. Still lifes, gardens, lemon trees, family gatherings and familiar interiors become the protagonists of paintings that celebrate the poetry of ordinary moments. Her figures inhabit a world where time slows down, inviting the viewer to pause, observe and reconnect with the essential.
